Welcome to Island Sands #506

Welcome to Mermaid Cove!

We are so happy to have you stay with us and want to be sure you have a great time here. PLEASE let us know WHILE YOU ARE HERE if there is anything we can do to make your visit more comfortable, if there is any problem or if you have any questions. It breaks our hearts to find out afterwards, when it is too late to make your stay more enjoyable.

You can find our favorite restaurants and recommended things to do as well as a list of our other accommodations (for when you return or for referring to friends!) on this web site.

Hosts:

Eve Hogan 808-280-5294 and Steve Hogan 808-268-3279

Designated Parking Stall: 54

Door: Please note that you have to manually turn the door knob toward “lock” when you leave in order to lock the door. I will send you the door code just prior to your stay, please note that it can be entered in any order.

Check In: After 4pm

(If we finish clean early, or don’t have anyone the night before we are happy to let you come early, but we may not know until the day of check in.)

Check Out: By 11am If you want a later check out, please inquire well in advance as our cleaners’ schedules cannot accommodate last minute changes. Same day turnarounds prohibit late check outs. If you have a red-eye flight, you may want to reserve an extra night so you can shower and relax before you depart. Specific instruction are at the bottom of the page.

The condo is fully stocked with everything we think you will need to have an enjoyable vacation. Please let us know if we forgot anything! We provide linens, soaps (dish/body/washing machine), shampoo/conditioner, hair dryer, beach towels, umbrella, beach chairs (PLEASE REMOVE SAND BEFORE PUTTING BACK IN THE CONDO!!!) The kitchen is also fully stocked. There is a drip coffee maker, filters, and coffee for your first few days, as well as a coffee grinder. There is a full stove/oven, dishwasher, full sized fridge, water filter, pots/pans, BBQ tools. Salt/pepper, foil, plastic wrap and some other spices. Please let us know if we forgot anything!

Shopping Carts:

There are shopping carts available for your convenience near the office for hauling your belongings and groceries up to the unit. Please return the carts when you are done with them. There is also a loading/unloading zone directly in front of office.

Trash:

There is a trash room/shoot just to the left of the elevator (if you are facing it) that you can put bags of trash in and it will go to the bottom floor. Please do not put anything outside of a bag in the shoot as it makes a huge mess.

Recycling:

PLEASE RECYCLE: There are large recycling bins on the bottom floor behind the office. There are extra trash bags on the bottom shelf of the closet across from the kitchen. Hawaii is way behind the mainland on recycling and only recycles plastic bottles with necks (food containers are not recyclable here.),  bottles, cans, and cardboard. Please separate into the bins downstairs mindfully.

Conservation:

We are on an island with limited (and therefore expensive) resources. Please turn off AC and lights when you aren’t home, close windows when using AC and conserve water.

Closest market:

We suggest you stop at the market on the way to the condo. Costco, Safeway and Whole Foods are all relatively near the airport. Once you are in Ma’alaea, there is a convenience store on the corner of the highway and Ma’aleaa Road at the gas station and there is a small supply of grocery items at the Ma’alaea General Store at the harbor, but the closest large grocery stores are either Safeway or Times Market in Kihei or Foodland in the Maui Lani area of Wailuku. (About 10 min away)

Beach Towels:

Towels are kept in the closet across from the kitchen. Sand is virtually impossible to shake out of wet terry cloth beach towels, they need to sun dry first and then get shaken out, before washing. We have “sand-free towels” for you because they don’t collect sand as much..

SAND:

PLEASE, PLEASE WASH SAND OFF OF FEET, ICE CHEST, BEACH CHAIRS, SHOES, ETC. BEFORE coming back into the condo. When at the beach, use the beach showers to remove as much sand as possible from your body/swim suits. SAND RUINS WASHING MACHINES/DRYERS and CLOGS SHOWER DRAINS. We really, really appreciate every effort you can make to minimize this problem. There is a foot wash by the pool, and a hose by the parking lot and by the beach for this purpose.

Quiet Hours:

Please note this building is shared with others and awareness is appreciated. Before 8am and after 9pm, please aim to quiet down. Please be respectful of others.

Art work:

Many of the photos were taken by us, we are both avid photographers. The large original art in the hallway is by local artist, Olga Bordenyuk. The other artwork by the TV and the entrance to the Master Bedroom is by local artist Laleyna Vann.

Kitchen

Oven/Stove: This is a bit of a “high tech” oven/stove. First, we have the controls locked, which is both locked and unlocked by holding the “Lock Controls” button for 3 seconds.

WE REQUEST that you RELOCK the controls after you use the stove top because it is REALLY easy to accidentally bump the burner controls and turn them on when you do not mean to have them on.

Please DO NOT use the stove top as a counter top as it is a hazard if the stove gets turned on and can melt plastic bags, cause fires, etc.

Each burner has it’s own control that is turned on and off by touching the center on/off button.

The heat level is managed by touching the circular controls and the circular control will light up to indicate how high the heat is.

There are two ovens. The top one is a broiler and the bottom one is both an oven and a conviction oven. They are turned on by touching the component you want  (bake and convection will turn on bottom oven and broil will turn on top oven). They are turned off by touching “Upper oven Cancel/off” or “Lower oven cancel/off”.

PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE ANTS, OR OTHER INSECTS.  The entire building gets quarterly treatments for pests, and we do our best to continuously manage them, as well. PLEASE HELP! The majority of the insects that come into the condo do so looking for food. The cleaner you keep the kitchen, the less likely they will be attracted to come in. THANK YOU!

Light Switches:

The light switch for the hanging light over the counter is located across the hallway on the outside of the linen/pantry closet.

Kitchen Lights/Switches: The Fan/overhead light are turned on by the second switch (to left of the sink) and then you need to pull the chains on the fan to turn off fan/light while the other is on.

Garbage Disposal: The first switch to the right of the sink is to the garbage disposal.

The under cupboard lights: The second switch to the right of the sink.

The light over the stove is the more easily reached from the living room and is the switch just beyond the stove, over the counter, under the dolphins.

Kitchen:

Dishwasher: You are welcome to use the dishwasher, however you may find it convenient to just wash the dishes and use the dishwasher as a drying rack. There is dishwasher soap and a dish rack under the sink.

Dishes: The plastic dishes are not microwave safe, so please use ceramic dishes in the microwave.

Water: Water in Hawaii is safe to drink, however, it tastes better filtered. There is a filter on the sink as well as filtered water in the door of the fridge.

Fire extinguishers: There is a fire extinguisher on the wall next to the washer/dryer and another one under the kitchen sink.

BBQ: There are BBQs in the pool area that you are welcome to use. There are BBQ Utensils in the kitchen drawer.

Water Alarm: There is a water alarm under the kitchen sink to alert you if the plumbing is leaking. If it goes off, please investigate for water leaks immediately and call us…808-280-5294. IF there is NOT a leak (even a wet towel wiping the floor can make it go off) there is a reset button on the alarm box under the sink.

Pool Key: The pool key is hanging from the hook on the mirror in the kitchen. Please return it to this hook.

Laundry:

The washer and dryer are located in the hallway. PLEASE REMOVE SAND from clothes and towels prior to washing. Sand ruins washer/dryer and clogs the drains. It is nearly impossible to shake sand out of wet towels it is more effective to sun dry the towels/swimsuits and then shake out the sand. Feel free to use a new beach towel instead of washing the sandy one…

Drying Rack: There is a laundry drying rack next to the washer and dryer THAT YOU CAN PUT OUT ON THE LANAI FOR SWIM SUITS, ETC. Please do not hang anything over lanai railing (against association rules). There are clothes pins in the cupboard above the washer/dryer.

Washer: To use as a washer, press the On button and then select the washer settings. Put laundry soap in pull-out drawer on top left in left compartment. (Soap is usually found in the cupboard above the washer/dryer. Please use cap to measure proper amount. If the soap is getting low or is out, please let us know!) Then push Start button.

When washer is not in use, it is best to leave it slightly ajar so it gets air flow.

Dryer: The dryer works the same way. Push ON, put the settings as you want them (USE THE TIMED DRYING option for best results), and then press Start. Please clean lint trap between uses.

Living Room

Air Flow: To achieve fresh air circulation, privacy and security…Lock the security screen on the front door, open the door about 10 inches so you still have privacy and use the door stops on the bottom of both sides of the door. This will give you security, privacy and a nice breeze through the condo.

Fan: The fan and light turn on/off with a remote control (White remote, attached to the wall next to the small dolphin carving).  Please leave remote there, or return it.

However, in order for the remote to work the wall switch has to be ON. The wall switch for the fan is located just below the dolphins to the right of the outlet.

The switch to the left of the outlet turns on the light over the stove.

The blinds in the living room do not work. We hope you enjoy the ocean view!

AirConditioner: Feel free to use the air-conditioner if needed (but you may find having the doors and windows open in the bedrooms brings in delightful ocean /mountain breezes!) The air-conditioner is located in the living room behind the chair on the left side of the lanai door. It turns on/off by either pressing the “on-off” button on the air condition or using the white remote labeled GE. The remote should be left up by the wood-carved dolphins.

PLEASE TURN THE A/C OFF WHEN YOU LEAVE THE UNIT and PLEASE TURN IT OFF WHEN THE DOOR/WINDOWS ARE OPEN.

There is a  portable A/C unit in both bedrooms. Please do not move them or the hose will come out of the vent, heating the room instead of cooling it.

TV in the living room:

The LG remote will allow you to switch to streaming Smart TV.

The Spectrum Remote operates the Spectrum Cable TV Box and is what you use to change cable channels and can also be used for volume. The “Guide” button will tell you the channel menu. It will also turn off and on the Spectrum box. You need to turn ON the Spectrum box to get cable. The TV needs to be set to HDMI 2.

Smart TV: As a courtesy, my Netflix is already programed with my password so if you enter as “evehogan” you can access Netflix. Any other streaming networks require your own log in credentials.

TV Console:

Books: In the cupboard there is a selection of novels/books mostly left by previous guests, feel to take the one you choose to read, exchange for one you have completed, etc.

PLEASE LEAVE THE BOOKS ABOUT MAUI/HAWAII here for future guests.

Lanai:

Turtles: If you look carefully you can see the turtles swimming right up against the sea wall…very visible from lanai! If you need a “tutorial” on spotting them, I can send you a short video.

Whales: Between Dec. and April whales can be seen from the lanai. Usually their spout will be seen first. Often if you watch the boats, you will find the whales…as they are seeking them out.

Lanai light switch: The switch for the outside light is on the mirrored wall, on the far right.

Sun Shade: You will find that during certain times of day/year the sun can get quite warm. There is an electric sun shade that raises and lowers with a remote that is (should be) in the top left drawer of the TV console.

PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING ON THE LANAI without weighting it down. Please be careful with napkins, etc and do not leave towels or laundry on the lanai. PLEASE, do not climb on the banisters or lean on them. If you have children PLEASE MONITOR THEM for their safety.

This is a no-smoking building and that includes the lanai. Thank you for being respectful of this rule. There is a designated smoking area on the property away from the building.

Bedrooms:

Light/Fan: The light and fan are on a remote control located to the left of the sliding glass door in the master bedroom (king) and located to the left of the bathroom in the 2nd bedroom (Queen). The wall switch must be turned on for the remote to work. The top button is the fan, the bottom button is the light.

Bedroom Window Blinds:

For the blinds over the louvered windows in the king bedroom, just gently pull to lower and push up to raise.

The blinds over the louvered windows in the queen bedroom use a pull cord.

Closets:

The closet in the master bedroom has beach chairs, umbrella, the vacuum cleaner, and a stepping stool. PLEASE be sure that all sand is washed off beach chairs before bringing them back into the condo. PLEASE ALSO CHECK TO MAKE SURE CHAIRS AND UMBRELLA WORK BEFORE YOU TAKE THEM TO THE BEACH. And let us know if they break so we can replace them.

The closet in the 2nd bedroom has a shower chair and some extra linens, and brooms.

Desk: There is a desk in the 2nd bedroom and a chair beside it. Please move the sliding doors when pulling out the chair so as not to scratch the doors.

TV in the 2nd bedroom: The Input needs to be on HDMI 2 for cable and Smart

Adjustable bed: The queen bed is an adjustable bed operated by a black remote labeled “Beauty Rest.” The remote is in the top drawer of the night stand; please return it there when you are all done with it. Please pay attention when raising and lowering the bed, if it is hitting the bed frame. It fits perfectly, but if it gets out of alignment, it could need adjusting.

Accessible Bedroom/bathroom: The 2nd bedroom is accessible for wheel chairs, the walls/door slide open. While aspects are accessible, we recognize that not everything is perfectly so. The bathroom vanity was custom made so that it could be rolled up to with a wheelchair, however it is slightly higher than optimum. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to make the condo easier to use.

Accessible Shower: WHEN USING THE SHOWER, PLEASE BE SURE THE CURTAIN IS CLOSED ON THE DOOR SIDE so as to minimize getting the doors and wooden door sliding trays wet. Please note that the water will come out the bottom spigot quickly and can overflow if not switched to the shower sprayer quickly. Please be mindful to try not to get water everywhere. The extra brown towels in the closet can be used to sop up water overspray. There is a shower chair in the bedroom closet.

Linen Closet/Pantry: In the linen closet across from the kitchen are extra towels, and beach towels.

There is a set of light brown towels in the linen closet that are not as new and serve well for things like dying hair, cleaning things…etc.

Please note that hair dye/bleach, and acne products ruin our sheets and towels. Please be aware of the products you use and wash them off before going to bed. If you need towels that are okay to ruin, use the light brown ones in the linen closet.
